Government Support

The Government recognises the environmental benefits that the additional energy efficiency of CHP plant can offer. As a result, CHP schemes that qualify as Good Quality CHP are exempt from the Climate Change Levy for all fuel inputs and electricity outputs. They are also eligible for other benefits including Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs) to stimulate investment, business rates exemption for CHP power generation plant and machinery, and ROCs for the biomass element of fuel utilised in Energy from Waste CHP plants.

For more information on Government support for CHP, see measures to encourage CHP on the DECC website.

The UK heat map has been developed as a tool aimed at assisting power station developers consider the opportunities for combined heat and power (CHP) as required under planning policy. However it can also be used by both small and large organisations to help identify the locations where CHP, renewable heat plants and district heating would have the greatest technical and economic potential, and therefore the largest positive environmental impact.
