Whisky-fuelled biomass CHP plant is to be built in Scotland.

The GreenSwitch CHP plant, which is capable of using wet biomass, will be powered using whisky distillery by-products. The £50m joint venture will use by-products such as process water, pot ale and draff for biomass fuel. Wood chip from sustainable forests will also help fuel the plant. Construction on the plant is hoped to begin in early 2010 once construction and engineering contracts have been awarded. The plant should be active by 2012.

The UK heat map has been developed as a tool aimed at assisting power station developers consider the opportunities for combined heat and power (CHP) as required under planning policy. However it can also be used by both small and large organisations to help identify the locations where CHP, renewable heat plants and district heating would have the greatest technical and economic potential, and therefore the largest positive environmental impact.
